Hotel and Hospitality English

This unique self-study course is for elementary-level adults who need English for the hospitality industry, such as workers in hotels and restaurants. Ideal for front-line staff who need to communicate confidently in English to maintain good customer relations.

 

 

Weekend English Refresher course

Weekend English Refresher courses are for visitors to Edinburgh who want to improve and revise spoken English communication skills whilst enjoying a weekend or long weekend holiday in Edinburgh or before visiting the rest of Scotland.

Weekend Refresher courses are usually 4 hours per day on Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 – 13:00, more or less hours are available on request.  The focus is on speaking and listening skills through a variety of communication activities although we can tailor courses for specific needs.  Tea, coffee and refreshments are provided throughout the morning.

You can study only in the mornings and have the afternoons free to explore the city on your own or take part in optional activities arranged by ECS Scotland.  If you prefer to have an intensive course, it is possible to study in the mornings and afternoons.

These courses are tailor-made and can be organised for a minimum of 3 people and maximum of 15. If you would like us to organise a weekend course for you and your friends, family or colleagues, please contact us for more information or to discuss your requirements.

Weekend courses can be organised for groups who need an intensive English course to focus on specific areas such as Law, Medicine, Finance or the Environment, preparation for conferences and workshops.

English Exam Preparation

Exam preparation courses are for students who want to prepare for any of the English exams such as: IELTS, TOEFL and First etc.

You will improve your general English speaking and listening communication as well as exam techniques, vocabulary, grammar and skills relevant for the exam.

What to expect:

  • Expand vocabulary areas suitable for general topics & for IELTS exam
  • Give presentations and work on pronunciation
  • Improve speaking and listening communication skills in English
  • Work on grammatical accuracy
  • Practise past exam papers: reading, writing & listening
  • Do mock speaking exams under test conditions

Legal English

The 1-to-1 classes will focus on your individual needs and will develop your Legal English vocabulary and communication skills, taking into account your specific line of work. Legal English courses are suitable for lawyers, paralegals, legal secretaries, students or professors of law or professionals working in legal departments.

This course can also help you prepare for the Test of Legal English Skills (TOLES).

What to expect:

  • develop specific vocabulary for legal English
  • improve general and social English language skills and your pronunciation
  • enhance your communication skills with English-speaking clients and colleagues
  • raise your awareness of intercultural issues and ‘global English’
  • practise using English for negotiating, explaining and telephoning
  • work on specific legal areas such as contracts, employment law, family law, correspondence
  • work on your specific requests

You will be emailed a ‘Needs Analysis’ form to complete before the start of your course.  During your first 1-to-1 lesson you and your teacher will put together a study plan for your course.  We encourage you to be active in the preparation and content of your course.

Conversation English

Individual Tuition (one-to-one) is for adults who want to work at their own pace and focus only on English vocabulary and topics which are relevant to them.

Individual Tuition means you can learn English quickly as you will have teachers who are dedicated entirely to your needs and requirements.  Substantial progress can often be made in a short time.

During the one-to-one classes you can choose to focus on English conversation practice, pronunciation, presentations and work or research related projects, particular grammar problems or vocabulary development.

We recommend one-to-one classes for beginner level students.

What to expect:

  • Personal needs analysis before arrival
  • Flexible tailor-made programme discussed with your teacher(s)
  • Focus on individual needs, wants, strengths and weaknesses
  • Choose to have some of your lessons out of the classroom.  You can visit museums, galleries, sights with your teacher

General English

General English courses are for adults who want to work in a small group with a maximum of 5 students to improve speaking and listening ability in English for work, travel or fun.  A small group with only 5 students or less means you can practise English conversation naturally and participate fully in every activity. Small groups give you more teacher time as well as more confidence and opportunity to speak in English.

What to expect:

  • discuss a wide range of topics relevant to contemporary life and society
  • develop your general English vocabulary so you can express yourself precisely and confidently in a variety of situations
  • listen to and watch different types of media
  • read various articles so you can extend your knowledge of Scottish and British culture
  • review common grammar problems and extend grammar knowledge
  • improve pronunciation and spoken fluency

Travel English

This course helps students easily learn the language needed for all common travel situations. This program unlocks many doors allowing you more enjoyment & richer experiences on your important trips & vacations.

What to expect:

  • Understand travel announcements
  • Use common travel expressions & slang
  • Show improved confidence when speaking
  • Travel, work or study worldwide more easily
  • Enjoy more conversational English
  • Use more advanced writing skills
